Proper insulation and air sealing keeps attics cold in winter by blocking the entry of heat and moist air from below. In the summer, natural air flow in a well-vented attic moves super-heated air out of the attic, protecting roof shingles and removing moisture. The insulation will resist heat transfer into the house.

- You will need a tape measure or ruler, a flashlight and your cell phone.
- Climb up your attic stairs or ladder and raise the attic hatch or door.
- Stick the ruler into the insulation or with the measuring tape calculate the depth in inches. Record the number or or use or cell phone to take a photo/video.
- Compare your results to the recommended R value. If you have less than 13-14 inches of insulation you are below the recommended levels and you will want to consider adding more insulation to increase your home’s energy efficiency.
